Detroit Session Recap. Just listening to rough mixes from the weekend and thought it was about time to share some photos. The studio is High Bias Recordings in Detroit, located in the heart of Corktown. FYI – musician’s candyland! What a fun place to record, not to mention a great hub for food. Any of you been down this way? We are highly recommending Bucharest Grill and of course, the infamous Slows Bar BQ. Much take-out was had thanks to my husband Joe. He really kept us well fed.
Ok… food aside, the project is coming along nicely. You’ll see producer Chris Bathgate doing what he does best (just about everything). My favorite Bathgate-ism thus far… “Say more about that.” My least favorite thing said, “Angela, that is not what dissonance means!” (Reminds me it has been a long while since music theory folks.) I had the privilege of meeting Colette Alexander who contributed some fierce and emotive cello. Colette has toured with Josh Grobin, which is especially meaningful because he was my sister Donna’s favorite (somewhere she is smiling down on us).
Speaking of amazing musicians, Samantha Cooper was in for a session. I have admired her fiddling since I first saw her perform with Chris several years ago. She has serious fiddlebustering stamina and can turn on a dime from Dixie to Gypsy. The studious looking blonde with glasses is our niece Katelyn. She is a great musician in her own right and I’m hoping to get her in the next time for a contribution to the project.
Finally, I can’t go without mentioning Grimes! Grimes is the studio’s 19-year-old feline goddess. She shows her approval with the occasional yowl in between long naps. So there you have it! We’ll be back down at the end of July, if not for more Slow’s.
