My husband and I spent a month in the South Pacific in 2014, specifically 3 weeks in New Zealand and a week in Sydney. What can I say? It was an amazing experience and my best gift is to be able to share it with you creatively. This is “Tangaroa” which in the Māori culture is the personification of the sea; the ancestor the origin of all fish. The source for this work is a 1969 magazine photo of the Apollo 11 capsule floating in the Pacific Ocean after it returned to earth from the 1st lunar landing. My exploration happened quite by accident when I began to manipulate the photo, but I think it captures the vibrant life of the sea that captivated us on our trip. I’m sure there’s more to come and this is just a little experiment, but I wanted to share it with you!
