GT Art Bomb – January 2013

It all starts as I am talking to my friend Amber about WIMA Fest.

“Just do something cool and artsy like you do!”

I am trying to back out of creating live art during Courtney Kaiser-Sandler’s performance at the festival.   It has been a while since I have painted and the thought of creating on the spot, in front of a crowd, for the first time in ages –  well that triple-threat, boat-rocking action just makes me nauseous.

It is apparent that I am not getting out of it, so I do what any self-respecting artist would do.  SOS! (I cry to my mom.)  Grab a life preserver. (They come in chocolate.)  And then I start doing the one thing I haven’t done in a long time – I pick up my paddle and row!  (That is – I begin to PAINT.) My “cool and artsy” solution comes about by accident and winds up being, well…. kind of cool.

And just when I trust all is calm, a new wave breaches the bow.  At the festival, someone wants to buy one of my existing paintings entitled “Rooted” that I had used as part of my set.  My response to this question is always, ALWAYS… “Thank you so much but I’m sorry they are not for sale as I use them when I perform.”

This time I hesitate.  That typical response, which has rung true for so long, no longer sparkles with clarity.  Mooring in the safe harbor of completed art is a still life study.  It’s time to weigh anchor on the rough, wild seas of the unknown. (said in my best pirate brogue)

Saturday was the opening reception at Right Brain Brewery for GT Art Bomb 2013.  It’s great to have this opportunity for artists to sell their work commission free and network.  Bravo to Ryan, Chien and the gang for putting the event together!

This is the first time my paintings have been for sale at a venue.   I am overwhelmed by the positive response and the insight others have had to offer, and thanks to all who came out.  It truly was a full house and everyone got to enjoy great beer, great art and non-stop music by some local faves including Billy Strings & Don Julin, E Minor and Blake Elliot  just to name a few.

If you didn’t catch my set, you missed something special because I was joined by the super-talented duo, The Accidentals; Savannah Buist on violin and Katie Larson on cello.  I love playing with these young women and they are pros at what they do.  They also did their own set and not only turn something you’ve heard into something totally cool and new, but they write bold and meaningful stuff.  Keep an eye on these girls – they have a very bright future ahead of them.

There is a full line-up of musicians on February 2nd at Right Brain and I’ll be performing again.   The paintings will be on display until March.  Stop in and check them out!

(And none o’ ye scurvy dogs needs be directin’ my attention to irony by way o’ that paintin’ being called “Rooted”)
